China’s No 1 tennis player Zhang Shuai was knocked out of the WTA Tour Tenerife Ladies Open in Spain, where the sixth seed was sent packing by compatriot Wang Xinyu.
World No 114 Wang won out in straight sets in the Canary Islands, beating the world No 55 in an hour and four minutes, 6-2, 6-1.
The 20-year-old qualifier will move on to face the winner of France’s Alize Cornet and Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland in the next round.
Zhang was the only Chinese player to keep playing on tour through the summer as the rest returned home to prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the China National Games. The 32-year-old was not named in China’s Olympic squad and did not play at the National Games.

She was not the only seed to see an early exit in Tenerife, with No 2 seed Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia beaten by Jaqueline Cristian in the first round. The world No 108 Romanian won 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
There was better news for Zhang as it was announced by the WTA that she has made the WTA Finals along with partner Samantha Stosur.

The US Open champions are one of five teams to be confirmed for the doubles invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico next month.
China’s No 3 Zheng Saisai is in action on day four in Tenerife. She takes on Spain’s Rebeka Masarova in their first round meeting.
Zhang will also return to the court in the doubles where she is partnered with Japan’s Eri Hozumi. The second seeds face India’s Ankita Raina and Rosalie van der Hoek of the Netherlands on Tuesday (local time).

Elsewhere, China’s world No 158 Zheng Qinwen is out of the women’s singles at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.
The only Chinese player in the draw was beaten 6-4, 6-3 by Ukranian world No 145 Lesia Tsurenko.
Zheng had come through qualifiers where she had beaten Russia’s Anastasia Gasanova and Romania’s Irina Bara.

Meanwhile, China’s world No 1 junior Jerry Shang Juncheng won a second ITF men’s tournament in the US on Sunday.
The 16-year-old Shang followed up his win on the hard court in Fayetteville last month with victory over Portugal’s Duarte Vale on clay in Naples, Florida.
Sheng beat Vale 6-3 7-6 to lift a second ITF title in just five men’s ITF Tour appearances. The current junior world No 1 is now up to a career best No 1,008 on the ATP Tour.
