Defending champions National Chengchi University battled into the final four of the Asian University Basketball League in Hangzhou on Thursday, but they were pushed all the way by their Yonsei University rivals.
The Taiwan students eked out a 72-67 victory over their South Korean rivals, in a game that was in the balance until the final minute.
Chengchi’s five-point lead at half-time vanished into a four-point deficit, as their opponents started the third quarter with a 17-8 run.
The title holders used a 9-0 run of their own to retake the lead, and led by as many as 10 in the final quarter. Yonsei twice got to within a point, but it was not enough in the end after top scorer Lee Chae-hyung fouled out in the final minutes.
“We were effective in suppressing their key players on both the offensive and defensive ends, which is why we were able to pull it through,” Fan Keng-hsiang, the Chengchi head coach, said.
“We capitalised on our height advantage on offence, and we dominated their key players on the other hand, gaining possession and converting those into points.
“Credit to our bench players too. Every one of them in NCCU possessed some very good ability; we just encouraged them to seize every opportunity when they were on the court, and they surely made the most from those minutes.”

Fan admitted that Lee Chae-hyung’s departure had been “crucial”, while Yonsei were not able to field their best team, with stars Lee Ju-young and Kim Seung-woo training for the 3x3 competition at next month’s Asian Games.
“Lee [Chae-hyung] is a complete player; the other players were more stable when he’s on the court,” he said. “If he drove the lane and drew our defence, their outside shooters would open up, so it’s crucial for us when he went out.”
The champions, who have yet to lose a match in eight AUBL appearances over two years, will take on Waseda University of Japan in the semi-finals after star player Shin Matsumoto erupted for a tournament-record 41 points in a 78-71 win over Korea University.
In the upper half of the draw, Shanghai Jiao Tong University overcame a 10-point deficit midway through the third quarter to beat Peking University 79-77, largely thanks to Chen Tiancan’s team-high 29 points.
“We’d prepared various tactics, but their key player Wang Zhipeng just couldn’t be contained, scoring 35 points,” Xu Yang, Shanghai’s head coach, said. “That said, I am particularly satisfied with my players’ execution in this game.
“We’re familiar with Peking; it’s just in this final stretch, we actually had a better grasp of the situation. We have a lot to summarise before the next match, but to crawl back from 10 points down, I am very happy with our performance.”
In the final match of the day, Tsinghua University, runners-up last year, beat the University of the Philippines 85-81.
