A new baby changes a family, and it is normal for everyone to take on different tasks now. But your studies and your concerns are still important. Here are some ways to start this talk with your parents.
Choose the right time to talk
Look for a time when your parents are not rushing or stressed. You could say something like, “Mum and Dad, I would like to talk to you about balancing my chores and schoolwork. When is a good time for you?”
Start with appreciation
Let them know that you understand why you are needed more right now and that you want to help with the new baby.
Then, share examples of how the extra chores affect your studies. For instance, are you staying up late to finish homework? Or maybe you are missing assignment deadlines and having trouble focusing. These details will help your parents understand the full situation.
Find a balance together
Make it clear that you want to support your family while also succeeding in school. You might phrase it like this: “I want to help prepare for the baby, but I’m also worried about my grades. Can we work together to find a balance?”
Remember your parents want that for you. They just may not realise how much the work is affecting you unless you tell them.
If the first chat does not go well, wait a little while and try talking to them again. Sometimes, parents need time to think and understand, especially because they may also be stressed about the pregnancy.
