Andre Blumberg has called on Hong Kong authorities to do more to protect the city’s nature. Blumberg is the creator of the Hong Kong Four Trails Ultra Challenge. It is a famous 298km ultra-marathon covering Hong Kong’s four major trails.
“Hong Kong is really privileged to have these natural resources and country parks,” Blumberg said. “It’s really vital for us to preserve those areas.”
Blumberg said a quota system should be used on public holidays. Local country parks and nature-based activities have become popular recently, especially with tourists.
But there are concerns about damaging fragile ecosystems.
Blumberg suggested Hong Kong use a system that limits the number of people who can visit certain areas of the country parks on any given day.
He highlighted national parks in the United States as an example. Some time visits to handle overcrowding.
Countries such as France and South Africa have also used quota systems in recent years at some of their popular parks.
“It takes a measured approach to make sure that these [natural] assets can be shared not just with the current generation but also with future generations,” Blumberg said.
