The city government of Seoul, South Korea, has improved its programme encouraging customers to bring their own cups to cafes. More stores can now join the initiative to help reduce waste from disposable cups and push people to be more eco-friendly.
The Seoul city government said that customers who bring their own cups to certain cafes can save at least 500 won (HK$2.61) per drink. Cafes will give a discount of at least 100 won, and the city will cover the remaining 400 won.
The programme began in 2023. This year, the city removed the requirement for a Seoul Pay membership, allowing more stores to participate.
To encourage public participation, the city will promote a monthly “Tumbler Day” at cafes. Customers who bring their own cups will receive an additional 2,500 won discount per drink, up to 50 drinks per store daily.
