Trump approval hits career low as living costs bite, new poll shows
Just 17 per cent of Americans endorse the president’s handling of inflation ahead of midterm elections
US President Donald Trump’s approval rating fell to 32 per cent – the lowest of his political career – as his fellow Republicans soured on his handling of the cost of living amid the unpopular Iran war, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found.
The poll, completed on Sunday, was conducted over a four-day period that saw Trump throw three major news organisations out of the White House and muse that Washington’s iconic Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts – named after slain President John F. Kennedy – could be torn down if Trump’s own name could not be added to it.
It found voters leaning away from supporting Trump’s fellow Republicans in the November 3 midterm elections that will determine control of Congress for the next two years.
Trump’s overall approval was down from a reading of 35 per cent in last week’s Reuters/Ipsos poll, with support among his own Republicans down to 73 per cent from 82 per cent a week earlier.
