A home-made bomb carried by a woman killed at least three people and injured 21 ‌near an upscale restaurant in central Moscow on Saturday evening, authorities said, amid unconfirmed speculation on social media that the attack may have been linked to the war in Ukraine.
Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAK) said an unidentified woman carrying an improvised explosive device had tried to get into the restaurant but had been stopped by a security ⁠guard.
NAK said the woman, the guard and a customer at the Balzi Rossi Italian restaurant had been killed instantly in the blast that ‌followed.
REN TV cited a source on Sunday as saying that two people who had been taken to hospital later died of their wounds, bringing the death toll to five, although there was ‌no official confirmation.
REN TV said six people remained in a serious condition.

“A home-made explosive device blew up at a restaurant in Kudrinskaya Square in Moscow, killing three people,” said the national anti-terrorism committee, quoted by state news agency TASS.
State media outlet RIA Novosti reported the woman attempted to smuggle the IED into the establishment but the security guard refused to let her in before the bomb exploded.
The Kommersant daily newspaper ⁠cited its own sources as saying that the bomb had been intended to maim and kill guests who were enjoying themselves on the restaurant’s summer ‌terrace outside.
It suggested that the ‌bomb had been set off by someone else remotely and that the woman carrying it may not have known that it was an explosive device.
The authorities did not name those killed or ‌injured nor ‌did they say who they thought might have been responsible.

Moscow Mayor ⁠Sergei Sobyanin on Sunday ⁠offered his condolences to the families of those killed and said those responsible would be punished.
“A brutal terrorist attack was carried out in Moscow,” he said in ‌a statement.
Heavily armed law enforcement officers sealed off the scene of the attack on Saturday.
Unverified social media ‌reports ‌suggested that a top Russian military commander had been the intended target but had been unharmed.
Russia’s FSB security service ‌said earlier this year that authorities would step up protection for high-ranking military officials after ⁠a series of assassinations and attempted killings it blamed on Ukraine.
Images posted on Russian Telegram channels showed fire engines and ambulances at the site.
According to an earlier report by the Baza Telegram channel, the explosion was caused by a gas blast in the cafe’s kitchens. ⁠
The news outlet said the explosion happened at the ‌upscale Balzi Rossi Italian restaurant.
The restaurant’s website said the venue, located in the wider city centre of the Russian capital, had been closed on Saturday for a private event.
Surrounding streets were cordoned off after the incident and investigators began their work.
