A Chinese national was charged in the United States on Wednesday with committing voter fraud during the 2024 presidential election for allegedly impersonating a fellow countryman and later submitting anonymous tips about him to immigration authorities.
Yupeng Sun, a Massachusetts resident, was arrested this week for allegedly submitting a fraudulent voter registration and ballot under the name of another Chinese national in the 2024 election that returned US President Donald Trump to the White House.
Sun and the other Chinese national’s family, whom he’d lived with, had a history of disputes. “They treat me as not good,” Sun said in a police interview, according to court records.
Court filings showed the 33-year-old allegedly submitted an online voter registration on October 10, 2024, impersonating the individual, who is a green card holder.
Three weeks later, on October 31, the defendant allegedly continued to impersonate the individual and cast an early voting ballot for the US presidential election, the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts said in a statement. Lawful permanent residents in America are not eligible to vote in local, state or federal elections.

“After registering to vote and voting, Sun allegedly submitted several anonymous tips in April and May 2026 to Homeland Security Investigations and US Citizenship and Immigration Services stating that the victim ‘illegally voted in the 2024 US presidential election’ and noting that ‘[h]e is not a US citizen but a permanent resident’,” the statement read.
The US Attorney’s Office also alleged that Sun impersonated the same Chinese national and the man’s Chinese national wife in fraudulent forms requesting they abandon their lawful permanent residence status. The forms were submitted to the US immigration service in April 2024.
The couple then returned from an international trip in June that year and were subjected to a secondary inspection at Boston’s Logan Airport. The pair had their green cards confiscated and deportation proceedings initiated, allegedly because Sun submitted the fraudulent forms.
Investigators said Sun rented a room from the victim, who was identified as J.L. and his family in Malden, Massachusetts, for a period between 2021 and 2023. Sun was arrested and charged with the assault and battery of J.L.’s adult daughter in 2023. These charges were dismissed in 2024.
The charging documents also show civil litigation and other disputes.
Trump has repeatedly claimed without evidence that there is massive voter fraud involving non-citizens in the US, which some fear may be a pretext for voter suppression in the upcoming election.
Each charge of fraudulent registration and fraudulent voting carries a sentence of up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a US$250,000 fine.
Sun is subject to deportation upon completion of any sentence imposed.
The case is not the first involving allegations of Chinese nationals voting in the 2024 election. Last year, Haoxiang Gao, a Chinese national and University of Michigan student, was charged with allegedly illegally registering to vote and casting a ballot in the 2024 election.
“The federal charges filed against Haoxiang Gao, a Chinese national, serve as a clear and unequivocal reminder that the FBI will investigate anyone who attempts to unlawfully interfere with the electoral process in the United States,” said Cheyvoryea Gibson of the FBI Detroit Field Office at the time.
