A man in northern China created a poignant record of his mother’s final 14 days, documenting her rapid decline from a vibrant woman to her last moments.
Gao, hailing from the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, shared that his mother travelled to his city for medical treatment after developing a fever and a persistent cough.
On August 29, he captured her arrival at the railway station. Dressed in her favourite red coat, she appeared energetic and in good spirits, walking with confidence and a spring in her step.
A hospital examination revealed inflammation in her lungs, but at that time, she remained independent, still managing daily tasks such as cleaning and doing laundry.

However, her condition soon worsened – she lost her appetite, became increasingly frail, and struggled to get out of bed.
Realising he might not have much time left with his mother, Gao began recording videos of her each day.
On September 6, she developed breathing difficulties and severe pain throughout her body. As relatives gathered at the hospital, she began sharing her final wishes with Gao and her daughters.
Her health declined further, leading to her transfer to a Beijing hospital where she was admitted to the intensive care unit.

Once moved out of the emergency room, Gao’s mother expressed that she had no regrets about her life. She requested to be cremated after her death and took the time to call Gao’s mother-in-law to thank her family for their unwavering support.
Honouring her wishes, the family decided to withdraw further treatment and took her home. Surrounded by her children and husband, she sat upright on her bed, carefully selecting the clothes she wanted to wear after passing.
Gao’s mother died on September 11 at the age of 63 due to multiple organ failure caused by acute leukaemia. The videos he recorded became a cherished visual record of her final days.
Gao reflected on how rapidly her illness progressed, leaving the family with little time to prepare. He realised they had underestimated the severity of her condition and sought medical help too late, though he expressed gratitude for the hospital’s efforts.

His mother had been in good health until she delayed seeking medical attention for a cough that began in February. Leukaemia was only suspected after she entered intensive care and was confirmed posthumously.
What touched Gao the most was his mother’s calm acceptance of her fate.
“If life is not measured solely by its length, then my mother’s life was rich and complete. I recorded these videos so that, after she is gone, I would still have a way to remember the traces she left behind,” he stated.
Gao also cautioned others not to dismiss minor health issues, as delaying treatment could lead to dire consequences.
The video resonated with viewers on mainland social media, garnering over one million likes.
One online observer commented: “Human life is genuinely fragile. Gao’s mother was a strong and brave woman, and her children displayed immense love and devotion.”
