Following a dispute with his neighbour, a Chinese man resorted to blasting ghost stories for more than 10 hours a day as revenge, deliberately keeping the volume just below the legal limit, drawing widespread ridicule online.
The case was revealed by the Ministry of Justice of the People’s Republic of China.
The man, surnamed Lu, and his cohabiter, surnamed Li, both from Guangzhou in Guangdong province, southern China, became embroiled in a dispute with their neighbour, surnamed Xie.

The exact cause of the conflict remains unclear.
In retaliation, Li and Lu began playing ghost stories through a loudspeaker placed against the shared wall every day, from 8.45am to noon, and again from 3.30pm to 10pm.
During these periods, eerie “ghostly mountain sounds” echoed through the neighbour’s home, looping continuously for more than 10 hours a day.
It is unclear how long they continued this form of revenge.
His actions not only targeted his neighbour in retaliation but also disturbed residents upstairs, disrupting their peaceful lives.

Another resident, surnamed Cui, who lives just two floors away, was also affected.
He endured the noise day after day, which severely disrupted his household, especially his child, who was preparing for the highly competitive college entrance examination and struggled to study in peace.
The situation became even more frustrating because that noise measurements showed the sound did not exceed legal limits.

According to monitoring, the noise level inside Cui’s home was 36 decibels, well below the regulatory thresholds of 60 decibels during the day and 50 decibels at night.
This meant that legal authorities were unable to impose penalties.
However, Cui believed that Lu was deliberately creating noise that seriously disrupted his family’s daily life, and therefore applied to the Guangzhou Haizhu District People’s Court for a pre-litigation injunction.
A pre-litigation injunction is a court order issued before a final judgment to prevent a party from causing irreparable harm.

The court ultimately ruled in favour of Cui, ordering Lu to immediately cease playing the disruptive recordings.
Later, under the supervision of court staff, Lu dismantled the audio equipment, deleted the “wild ghost” recordings and pledged not to cause further noise disturbances.
The incident sparked amusement and ridicule online, sparking a wave of humorous comments.
One person asked: “I am quite curious: what kind of dispute would make someone play ghost stories for over 10 hours?”
Another said: “This guy is really bold. Is he not scared himself? He is not sparing either himself or his neighbours.”
While a third joked: “What if he ran into someone like me who actually enjoys listening to ghost stories?”
