A retired American teacher has reunited with a Chinese farmer 26 years after their initial encounter, returning to the once-barren sandy landscape transformed by his generous donation into a lush green environment.
In 1999, Ronald Sakolsky, now 67, was teaching English in Luoyang, Henan province, central-eastern China, when he discovered Inner Mongolian farmer Yin Yuzhen’s efforts to combat desertification. Inspired by her dedication, he donated US$5,000 to support her mission.
The pair first met during a donation ceremony in the Mu Us Desert in 2000. Afterwards, Sakolsky returned to the US, while Yin used the funds to plant over 50,000 trees.
Today, vegetation covers more than 80 per cent of the Mu Us Desert, which is one of China’s four major sandy regions.

In May, Yin, now 60, reconnected with Sakolsky via video call and invited him back to China to witness the “green miracle” that his contribution had helped foster.
Their long-anticipated reunion took place at Ordos Airport on August 23. Yin, with her signature long braid, broke down in tears as she embraced Sakolsky. She later recalled the tears “tasted sweet,” while Sakolsky expressed his gratitude to her and her husband, tears streaming down his own face.
“I never thought I would see you again. That in itself is a miracle,” Sakolsky remarked. “It also shows that people from different cultures can keep their promises.”
That evening, they explored the city and paused at a musical fountain as “See You Again” played in the background. After singing along, Sakolsky joyfully declared in Chinese: “I am back.”

The following day, he admired the fruits and vegetables Yin had cultivated in the desert and visited her home, which had transformed tremendously since the humble mud-brick dwelling of decades before.
“If you take care of the Earth, the Earth will reward you,” he observed, adding that after more than four decades of battling the desert, Yin “deserves the very best.”
Together, they walked hand in hand into the government-designated “Sakolsky Forest,” where he embraced the trees and planted a friendship tree alongside Yin.


“You gave the trees life and watched them grow, just as parents take pride in their children,” he told state-run English-language cable TV, CGTN.
For Yin, however, the forest came with a personal cost. She reflected that decades spent nurturing trees had made her a devoted “mother” to the forest, but perhaps less so to her family.

Driven by the belief that she would “rather die planting trees than be defeated by the sand,” Yin endured years of hardship alongside her son, who still helps tend the forest. Her commitment consumed so much of her life that she admitted she did not even know her grandchild’s age.
Sakolsky sees Yin as the true driving force behind the green transformation.
“More than 20 years ago, US$5,000 was equivalent to about 20 years of income for a Chinese farmer,” he pointed out. “She could have used it to improve her own life, but instead, she dedicated it to the trees. Very few people would do that.”
He told the SCMP that before meeting Yin, he never considered himself an environmentalist and had minimal knowledge of desertification. Their friendship profoundly reshaped his perspective on humanity’s relationship with the planet.

“We only have one Earth. If we don’t take care of her, she won’t take care of us.”
After several days together, Sakolsky found that language increasingly felt unnecessary. He reflected that their bond was truly one of the heart.
Yin noted another quiet connection: both kept phones filled with photographs of animals, a sign, in her eyes, of their shared deep affection for life.
Before leaving the desert, Sakolsky collected a jar of sand to take home, seeing it as both a piece of the forest and a symbol of the ties between ordinary people in China and the US.
Yin also presented him with a cross-stitch piece bearing the words “One Earth, One Dream,” along with a pair of handmade insoles embroidered with roses and blessings.

During his trip to China, Sakolsky also visited Luoyang. His reunion with Yin resonated with the public.
At the Inner Mongolia Museum, visitors quickly recognised and greeted him, as videos of the pair garnered over 120 million views on mainland social media within days.
One commenter described their story as “a bond of trust that transcends time and distance,” adding: “Sakolsky sowed seeds of kindness, and Yin nurtured them over decades.”
Another wrote: “I’ve followed this story for months, and it is heartening to see it come full circle. In the right hands, US$5,000 can change the world.”
