A minibus driver is fighting for his life in hospital after veering into oncoming traffic and crashing into the entrance of an upscale Hong Kong housing estate, throwing him out of the vehicle.
A source said on Tuesday that police were investigating whether the 79-year-old driver was wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred in Mid-Levels at around 11.18pm the day before.
A spokesman for the Hospital Authority said the man, who was in Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam, remained in critical condition as of Tuesday morning.
The minibus, carrying one passenger, was travelling downhill along Garden Road when the accident happened on Monday night, according to police.
The source said the driver lost control of the minibus, resulting in the vehicle crossing the opposite lane and crashing into the flower bed at the entrance of Estoril Court, a high-end housing estate.

“The driver was hurled out of the vehicle through the windscreen. He sustained head injuries and lost consciousness before emergency responders arrived,” he said. The passenger was unhurt in the incident.
Police said the unconscious driver was rushed to Queen Mary Hospital for treatment.
The source said it was possible the driver might not have been wearing a seat belt during the accident, as an initial investigation found no damage to the safety device.
He added that the driver might have suddenly fallen ill and passed out at the wheel, causing his vehicle to run out of control.
Officers from the Hong Kong Island traffic unit are following up on the case.
The number of people killed or seriously injured in traffic accidents across the city dropped by 35.5 per cent to 681 in the first 10 months of this year from 1,056 in the same period in 2023, according to official data.
