A former Hong Kong police constable who was left paralysed and bedridden for 21 years following a knife attack during a stop-and-search has died, the force has confirmed.
Jacky Chu Chun-kwok, who was in his fifties, died on Wednesday, a source said.
The force confirmed Chu’s death on Thursday, saying it would extend condolences to his family and provide necessary support.
Frankie Leung Chun-kit, chairman of the Junior Police Officers’ Association, said on Thursday that the force’s management supported burying Chu in Gallant Garden, a dedicated site at Wo Hop Shek Public Cemetery for public servants who died in the line of duty.
Leung also said he had suggested holding a funeral with either full police honours or police honours to pay tribute to Chu.
On the morning of July 19, 2005, Chu was critically injured during a solo patrol when a man stabbed him in the neck with a six-inch knife.
The attacker, Liu Chi-yung, was carrying the knife with the intention of robbing pedestrians when Chu, a member of the Police Tactical Unit, stopped him for an identity check outside the Po On Road Municipal Services Building in Cheung Sha Wan.
When the 30-year-old constable grew suspicious and confronted him, Liu pulled out the knife, stabbed Chu in the neck and fled.

Despite his severe injuries, Chu took off in pursuit but eventually collapsed from excessive blood loss. His fellow police officers arrived at the scene and stabilised him, but his injuries resulted in brain oxygen deprivation and left him completely paralysed and in a vegetative state.
Later that afternoon, Liu surrendered to another police officer at Prince Edward MTR station.
Liu, 23 at the time of the offence, admitted at the High Court in April 2006 to possessing an offensive weapon and assaulting an officer.
He told the court he planned to commit robbery with a knife before Chu intercepted him.
He was initially given six years in prison, with the sentence later increased to 10 years on appeal. Liu was released on parole in 2011 after serving more than five years.
Chu was awarded the Medal for Bravery (Gold) in 2006. In its commendation, the government noted the police officer had showed extraordinary courage despite his injuries in the attack, making every effort to arrest the armed assailant until he collapsed.
