Hong Kong police are investigating the deaths of a couple in their seventies after their bodies were discovered inside their home in Ma On Shan.
Police said officers were alerted at around 8pm on Friday to a strange odour emanating from a flat in Heng Yat House at Heng On Estate.
Firefighters forced entry to the flat, discovering a 72-year-old man and his 74-year-old wife lying in the living room, police said, adding the couple were pronounced dead at the scene.
No suicide note was found, and the cause of death was awaiting autopsy results, the force said.
A source said on Saturday that the couple had a good relationship, and had one daughter and two sons, who lived separately after getting married.
The couple suffered from high blood pressure, diabetes and hyperlipidemia, while the wife had also been living with dementia for five years, the source added. Both required regular medical appointments at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin.
According to the source, a man had noticed a foul smell coming from the couple’s flat since Monday and had made several complaints to the estate management. After staff found nothing suspicious, the man escalated his concerns to police.
Officers found the flat’s door and windows were locked, with no signs of ransacking or a struggle, while an examination of the bodies revealed no suspicious injuries, the source said.
Neighbours told officers that the couple had a good relationship and were not involved in any feuds or disputes over debts, the insider added.
Surveillance footage showed the pair returning to the building at 11.13am on August 31, and they were not seen again afterwards, the source said. A forensic examiner found no signs of foul play and estimated the time of death to be about three to four days earlier.
Following a preliminary investigation, police classified the case as dead body found, with the force’s Sha Tin district following up, the source said.
