The Hong Kong Heritage Museum is reviving its tribute to late singer-actor Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing three years after its first iteration, marking what would have been the Cantopop icon’s 70th birthday with rare items from private collections, stage costumes and other exhibits.
The “Miss You Much. Leslie 70th Birthday. Exhibition” runs from September 9 this year to May 10, 2027, at the museum in Sha Tin. Admission is free for the event, which is being presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
Cheung, affectionately known to fans as “Gor Gor” – Cantonese for “big brother” – rose to stardom during Cantopop’s golden era in the 1980s and 1990s.
Returning on a “much grander scale” than the 2023 showcase, the exhibition features more than 300 items, including vinyl records, film posters and other pop-culture memorabilia.
In addition to the museum’s own collection, the exhibition includes items loaned by Cheung’s long-time partner, Daffy Tong Hok-tak, and former manager Florence Chan Sock-fun, among other loved ones, fan group Les FANmily and independent artists. The exhibition marks the first time many of these objects will be displayed publicly.
Highlights include 11 costumes worn during Cheung’s live acts, notably the cloak he wore for his performance of “For Your Heart Only” at his Final Encounter of the Legend show in 1989, as well as his gold jacket, sequinned top and purple-striped trousers from Live in Concert 97.
For the first time, the museum has recreated the interior of Cheung’s former residence in collaboration with his original interior designer. The display includes a photograph of his friends gathering at his house after his death.
Six of Cheung’s films will also be screened at the museum during the event.


“[The exhibition] will give a fuller picture of Gor Gor on and offstage, and hopes to share his warmth with the public,” said Chan, who is also a guest curator for the exhibition.
Brian Lam Kwok-fai, museum director, said that about 370,000 people visited the 2023 exhibition, noting that many came from Japan, South Korea and parts of Southeast Asia, among other places.
He expected that the exhibition would draw large crowds, especially on September 12, Cheung’s birthday. Visitors would be allocated time slots for entry to improve the viewing experience on busy days, he said.
“We hope this exhibition allows us to once again pay tribute to Gor Gor’s significant contribution to Hong Kong’s popular culture, and to showcase our city’s pop music and performance techniques on the international stage and promote Hong Kong’s popular culture,” Lam said.
Cheung’s career began in 1977, when he became first runner-up in the Asian Music Contest with his performance of Don McLean’s “American Pie”. He went on to release more than 40 albums and appear in 56 films.
His breakthrough film role came in the 1986 hit A Better Tomorrow, followed by starring roles in acclaimed titles such as Farewell My Concubine, Days of Being Wild, Ashes of Time and Happy Together.
Cheung plunged to his death from the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Central in an apparent suicide in 2003.
