The global advertising industry is mourning the death of Meta Greater China creative shop chief Kitty Lun Kit-ying, who drowned in a swimming pool at a residential complex in Hong Kong earlier this week.
A source close to the investigation confirmed on Thursday that Lun was identified as the 70-year-old woman who died after drowning in the pool of Ville De Cascade in Fo Tan on Monday.
She was seen swimming at about 5.20pm that day and was later pulled unconscious from the pool.
Resuscitation was attempted before she was rushed to Prince of Wales Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the source said.
Crowned the “Queen of Public Service Advertising in Hong Kong”, Lun masterminded several campaigns over the course of her career that became familiar to Hong Kong households.
Her most recent role was head of Meta Creative Shop for Greater China.
“Kitty championed the creative and advertising community throughout her career, and she was a visionary leader who shaped our creative direction and nurtured our people over the years,” a Meta representative said on Thursday.
“She will be remembered for her exceptional talent, kindness and generosity, and for the profound impact she had on all who had the privilege of working with her.”

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Lun studied communication at the city’s Baptist University before moving to Syracuse University in New York to pursue a master’s degree in advertising.
Her best-known work included a television advertising series for the Independent Commission Against Corruption.
The series, known as “Our Advantage Is ICAC”, featured absurd scenarios in which a voice-over described images of a deer as a horse, a black screen as “white” and vice versa, and a cup of contaminated water as clean, illustrating the dangers of corruption.
Another of Lun’s well-known campaigns was “Life has no Take 2”, created for the government’s youth crime prevention initiative.
In a ceremony speech for Baptist University’s communication school in June, Lun urged graduates to move beyond “accuracy” and towards “truth” by engaging with daily life and connecting with people in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).
“I use AI every day. It’s amazing at ‘what’. It analyses data, it gathers information, it generates, it iterates, it translates and it optimises,” she said.
“But it cannot come with me to Mong Kok, and talk to young juvenile delinquents and the young drug addicts, and listen to their lives, their helplessness and what desperation they were having.”

LIA Chinese Creativity, a global awards show created by the London International Awards that celebrates top Chinese-language advertising, also paid tribute to Lun on Thursday.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Kitty Lun, one of Hong Kong’s most respected advertising and creative leaders,” it said.
“Throughout her remarkable career, Kitty created countless memorable works and inspired generations of advertising professionals with her creativity, passion and dedication to the industry.”
Fellow advertising industry leader Chris Kyme also spoke highly of his long-time colleague, saying: “Kitty Lun was probably unrivalled as a Hong Kong-bred creative leader, female or not, who just kept powering her way across the industry.”
