A lawyer has warned internet users in Hong Kong against exposing personal information of others on social media or risk committing the criminal offence of doxxing, after an insurance firm suspended an employee allegedly involved in a brawl at a Kwun Tong shopping centre.
Insurance service provider AIA on Thursday reportedly suspended an employee who was linked to a viral dispute among three women at a children’s play area the previous day.
The trio were charged with fighting in a public place, while the AIA staff member’s elderly mother faces an additional count of common assault.
The woman and her 68-year-old mother were seen in a viral video of the brawl at APM mall in Kwun Tong on Wednesday, with internet users screen-grabbing and sharing their faces.
Internet users also exposed and widely circulated the 34-year-old woman’s personal details, such as her name, her profession, and details of her social media accounts such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, as well as the address of the AIA office where she worked.

Lawyer Vincent Chong Yip-fung warned that social media users risked committing the criminal offence of doxxing by disclosing others’ personal information and causing them harm.
“There’s a chance that those who disclosed the mother’s background could fall foul of doxxing as the disclosure had caused specific harm to the mother, including psychological harm,” he said.
He advised social media users to refrain from disclosing other people’s personal information.
“People can comment on a particular incident. No need to expose others’ personal information as law enforcement will handle it,” he said.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data said it had not received any complaint in relation to the matter and would not comment on the case because it involved judicial proceedings.
The three women were involved in a brawl in a children’s play area in the atrium of the shopping centre on Wednesday.
A dispute reportedly erupted between a boy and a five-year-old girl in the play area, prompting his grandmother to get involved.
Investigators said they believed that the girl’s mother initially slapped the grandmother, who then struck back at the woman and her daughter.
