Hong Kong Disneyland is collaborating with Pixar Animation Studios to offer an exclusive theatrical experience centred around a home-grown character, with the resort dropping clues in its concept art that suggest she could be a pangolin.
The theme park announced on Sunday that a massive theatre space would be unveiled at Toy Story Land in the first half of 2027, with the theatrical experience to be exclusive to the city.
“Through beloved Pixar characters, guests will experience an emotional adventure that explores how meaningful friendships are built, nurtured and celebrated over time,” said Michael Serna, executive creative director at Disney Live Entertainment.
The show’s storyline focuses on Poppy, a plush toy from Hong Kong, who is settling into a new community with her owner, Aria.

Audiences will spot nods to growing up in the city through Aria’s collection of keepsakes and childhood memories, which include Chinese chess pieces, a rattle drum and local treats such as egg tarts.
While Disneyland Hong Kong has not explicitly confirmed details about Poppy’s appearance, a photo from a press event shows concept art drawings of a pangolin.
An illustration shared in a press kit also shows a design for the new theatre space and has a sign saying “Poppy and Her Flowering Friends” and featuring a pangolin-like animal.
A second piece of concept art shows a tail covered in pink scales in a corner of the illustration, hinting that it belongs to the same character.
The park also described Poppy as sweet and a little shy, and said she had a unique habit of curling into a ball whenever she felt nervous or overwhelmed – another potential nod to a pangolin.
Her storyline will see her cross paths with beloved characters from other Pixar franchises, such as Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., Cars, The Incredibles and Inside Out.

The project marks the first three-way theme park performance collaboration between Disney Live Entertainment, Pixar, and Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) – the Disney-owned global visual effects pioneer.
“This groundbreaking production brings together the best of Pixar storytelling, Disney Parks’ expertise in creating immersive entertainment experiences and ILM’s pioneering filmmaking technology,” the park said.
Hong Kong Disneyland also unveiled fresh details of a multi-year plan to expand its Marvel-themed attraction.
At the heart of the expansion is a new pavilion at the Stark Expo. The area’s storyline has Tony Stark, better known as the superhero Iron Man, choose Hong Kong as the Asia headquarters of his business, Stark Industries.
But the park stopped short of revealing when the site will open to visitors.
The attraction will also feature Spider-Man, a fellow crime-fighting superhero and the alter ego of Peter Parker.
Park patrons will have the chance to visit the “Quinjet landing platform”, where they can encounter various superheroes throughout the day.
