Hong Kong authorities have found a 60-year-old woman on a hillside near a cemetery nearly two weeks after she went missing, despite the search being hampered by a typhoon and days of heavy rain.
Police said on Monday that Ngan Lai‑ching left her home at Kwong Ming Court in Tseung Kwan O on the morning of July 24 without a mobile phone or an Octopus card.
Authorities noted that she has a history of schizophrenia.
Ngan’s daughter reported her missing after she failed to return home the following day, and the police classified her as a high-risk missing person.
Rescuers used police security camera footage to narrow the search to hills near the Tseung Kwan O Chinese Permanent Cemetery, about 3km (1.86 miles) south of her home.
Civil Aid Service personnel discovered one of her shoes at about 11.30am on Monday, with the other found 10 metres further up a hill.
Ngan was located near the cemetery and On Luen Village at 1.08pm. She was conscious but had several abrasions.
Images released by authorities show her lying on a slope with thick vegetation.
She was given warm clothing and airlifted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan. Her condition is currently stable.
Police said the rescue mission was highly challenging as the search was hampered by repeated rainstorms, muddy trails and landslides.

Hong Kong issued the No 8 typhoon signal on July 25 – the day after Ngan left home – and later upgraded it to No 9 in the early hours of the next day when Typhoon Noul swept across Hong Kong and Guangdong.
The storm brought gale-force winds, heavy squally showers and rough seas.
The city also continued to be hit by heavy downpours over the past week.
Kevin Chan Kwok-pan, an executive member of the Hong Kong Survival Association, described the woman’s survival as “miraculous” given her age, mental condition and the inclement weather.
“It has been raining almost constantly, and it is rare for someone to survive in the wilderness for so many days without succumbing to hypothermia,” he said.
For those unable to care for themselves, such as children, the elderly or people with mental health conditions, Chan suggested family members make use of smart tracking devices.
“Family members can attach AirTags to their clothing or have them wear accessories with locating and tracking functions. They can also dress them in brighter colours and familiarise them with the surrounding environment,” he said.
Chan added that someone out in the wild during storms and downpours could stuff materials such as plastic bags and dry leaves into their clothes to create a layer of insulation to trap heat.
