Veteran Hong Kong theatre figure “King Sir” Chung King-fai has died at the age of 89.
Chung’s nephew confirmed the actor’s death on Wednesday, saying he had died peacefully in his sleep at home in the morning.
“My uncle dedicated his entire life to the theatre, leaving behind a lasting legacy through the generations of students he inspired,” the nephew said through the social media page of free-to-air broadcaster TVB.
“We are deeply aware of the profound respect and affection everyone holds for him. Thank you all for your continuous care and companionship throughout his life.”
He said details on funeral arrangements would be announced later.
Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui offered her deep condolences over Chung’s death, praising his lifelong contribution to local theatre. She said he had provided invaluable insight to the government through various advisory roles.


“King Sir directed and performed in many classic stage productions over the years . He also appeared in a number of films, leaving us with cherished collective memories,” Law said.
“His passing is a tremendous loss to Hong Kong’s performing arts sector. We will always treasure the memory of this stage veteran and remain deeply grateful for his distinguished contributions to the performing arts in Hong Kong.”
Widely known as “King Sir”, Chung was a titan of Hong Kong’s performing arts scene. Over a career spanning several decades, he left an indelible mark on the city as a visionary theatre director, actor and educator.
He was deeply respected not only for his masterful stage productions but also for his profound dedication to mentoring generations of local talent.
Born in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1937, Chung was brought to Hong Kong as an infant but his family fled to mainland China during the Japanese occupation.
Returning to post-war Hong Kong in 1947, he discovered his passion for acting at Pui Ching Middle School, twice winning the city’s inter-school drama competition’s best actor award.

He later pursued his studies in the United States, earning a bachelor of arts degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and a master of fine arts from the prestigious Yale School of Drama in 1962 as the sole Asian student in his class.
Upon his return, Chung began modernising the local performing arts landscape, introducing the city’s first tertiary drama courses at the then Hong Kong Baptist College.
He joined TVB in 1967, rising to general programme manager.
Recognising a severe talent shortage, he proposed and established the broadcaster’s Artiste Training Class in 1971, personally training the first four cohorts that included future superstars such as Chow Yun-fat.
Chung also pioneered Cantonese-adapted Broadway musicals and Hong Kong productions inspired by the post-war Theatre of the Absurd movement. He directed more than 80 stage productions, including Equus, and performed in others such as Tuesdays with Morrie.
His versatile career also included television and film, and his resonant voice made him a sought-after narrator for major documentaries.

Chung was the driving force behind the creation of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, serving as the founding dean of its school of drama from 1985 until 2001.
His contributions earned him the government’s Silver Bauhinia Star, multiple honorary doctorates and an entry in the Encyclopedia of China.
Chris Ip Ngo-tung, vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, praised Chung’s enduring dedication, noting that he had not only starred in numerous beloved screen and stage productions, but also devoted himself to educating and nurturing generations of local talent.
“Chung’s lifelong pursuit of excellence and perfection has inspired generations of Hong Kong performers, making an indispensable and monumental contribution to the development of Hong Kong’s arts sector and the cultivation of its talent,” he said.
