The father of Mo Li Kai-yin, the dancer paralysed by a falling giant screen during a 2022 concert by popular Hong Kong boy band Mirror, has died.
The Christian Ministry Institute on Saturday announced the death of Reverend Derek Li Shing-lam, who spent years advocating for his 31-year-old son after the accident shocked the city.
“Reverend Li devoted his life to loving the Lord,” the institute said of its former president.
“The beautiful traces of his life will live on in the hearts of his colleagues, teachers and students. We earnestly request that fellow believers remember Reverend Li’s wife and family in prayer, and ask the Lord to grant them comfort and peace.”
The institute ended its post with a passage from the Bible: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
The elder Li revealed that he was in treatment for an undisclosed illness about a week earlier on his Facebook page. He had also used the account to provide regular updates about his son throughout recent years in the form of bi-weekly prayer letters.
The post, titled “Father and Son in Harmony, Striving Forward”, said he was receiving treatment and had suffered from vomiting and fever.
Earlier posts had also indicated Li had been suffering from physical discomfort and had repeatedly faced concerns from doctors about a possible cardiovascular issue.

In a post last month, the reverend said that he faced uncertainties about whether his body could endure the strain, how much longer he could walk this path with his son and how the future would unfold.
The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
News of the loss prompted an outpouring of condolences across social media.
“You worked so hard. My heart aches for you. May you rest in peace,” one user wrote.
“Honestly, dads are the greatest. No matter what, they are always there for their sons. Rest in peace, sir,” another wrote.
Li was due to appear at his son’s civil claim trial on May 4.
District Judge Phillis Loh Lai-ping had earlier ordered the trial to determine how much Studiodanz, the younger Li’s employer at the time of the accident, must pay in compensation.
Loh had also said the company was “evading civil responsibility” as its representatives had failed to attend any hearings in the case and had been uncontactable.
The younger Li suffered serious spinal cord injuries after a four-by-four-metre (13-by-13-foot) overhead video screen weighing 560kg (1,235lbs) crashed to the stage after a supporting cable broke at Hong Kong Coliseum on July 28, 2022.
In March this year, the son shared a video showing himself moving independently in a wheelchair for the first time since the accident.
