The South China Morning Post has won 74 awards at the 47th edition of the Society for News Design’s Creative Competition, including three silver and 11 bronze medals.
An infographic on Hong Kong’s fencing boom was a stand-out winner in results announced by the society on Friday, earning three silver and one bronze medal.
“It’s a great honour to receive these awards that are often called the ‘Oscars of visual journalism’. This global recognition reflects the hard work and innovation happening in our newsroom every day,” said Chow Chung-yan, the SCMP’s editor-in-chief.
“It also affirms our commitment to telling Asia’s story with depth and clarity in an age of information overload.”
Kaliz Lee, the SCMP’s assistant graphic director, said the team was honoured by the recognition.
“This achievement is a testament to a team that brings together specialised talents in data, digital engineering, illustration, and creative problem-solving,” she said.
“By seamlessly integrating these skills and never compromising on quality, we ensure the delivery of clear, trustworthy visual journalism.”
The project, which examined the rise of fencing in Hong Kong following recent Olympic successes, won three silver awards in the “infographic (digital)”, “story page design (print)” and “infographic (print)” categories, as well as a bronze for “use of multimedia and design elements – illustrated reporting”.
The digital version was created by senior designers Victor Sanjinez and Rocio Marquez, designer Catherine Ma and designer (infographic) Brian Wang, alongside Lee, while Sanjinez produced the print version.

Among the bronze winners was a project by senior designer Davies Christian Surya, Lee, Sanjinez and freelance illustrator Eunice Tse, which visualised the human toll of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The project won three bronze medals in the “infographic”, “use of multimedia and design elements – experimental” and “international story page design” categories.
“Washed Ashore”, by Surya and former SCMP reporter Jiang Chuqin, which explored why marine mammals wash up along Hong Kong’s coastline, also won three bronze medals.
These were for “climate and environment infographic”, “use of multimedia and design elements – illustrated reporting”, and “story page design in climate and environment (print)”.
“When a Typhoon Hits Hong Kong”, by Wang, senior designer Carlos Araujo, designer Joe Lo, Ma, Surya, Jiang, Lee, Marquez and Sanjinez, received a bronze medal.
Sanjinez also won a bronze in the individual category for his infographic portfolio.
The competition recognises excellence in print and digital storytelling, graphics and social media.
