The Hong Kong government has called in law enforcement to investigate allegations that signatures were forged and personal data used without authorisation in a petition submitted by residents displaced by the deadly blaze in Tai Po.

The South China Morning Post earlier learned that property owners of Wang Fuk Court had organised a petition and emailed Hop On Management Company last month to raise concerns and request an owners’ meeting.

In the petition, residents said the request to the administrator of Wang Fuk Court was backed by “many homeowners” who hoped to have a formal discussion on resettlement and expressed concerns about the transparency of the decision making process.

In a reply to the SCMP on Thursday, the Home Affairs Department said it had received complaints about the validity of the petition.

“Individual owners alleged the so-called petition lacked a verification mechanism, which might involve forged signatures and the impersonation of property owners,” a department spokesman said.

The department added that it had referred the complaints to law enforcement and statutory bodies for further investigation.
