All passengers departing from Hong Kong International Airport are now prohibited from carrying more than two power banks, effective immediately, the Airport Authority announced on Saturday night.

Citing new rules from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Hong Kong’s Civil Aviation Department, the authority said the global body had announced the requirements to address emerging safety risks posed by lithium battery power banks.

Under the new rules, each departing passenger could carry no more than two power banks and would be prohibited from recharging them during flights, the authority said.

“Effective immediately, all passengers departing from Hong Kong International Airport are required to observe the requirements,” it said.

The authority advised passengers to contact their airlines for further details and help.

On Friday, the ICAO said that following newly agreed measures, passengers would be limited to two power banks each and prohibited from recharging them during flights.

Crew members, however, will continue to carry and use power banks in line with operational requirements.
