The pedestrian footbridge linking Hong Kong’s Central Pier with the International Financial Centre (IFC) will be demolished and replaced by a temporary one, with Wednesday marking its last day open to the public.
A new temporary passageway, located near the current footbridge, will be open for use on Thursday, according to Henderson Land Development.
On Wednesday, some residents came to take a final look at the old bridge before its closure.
Lukas Mok, 25, was among those snapping photos to document the azure blue bridge with his friend Jacky Chan.
“In the past you could get a view of the [ferris] wheel and the clock tower in one shot, but now you cannot,” he said, referring to the new temporary bridge blocking the view.
“I wanted to take a last photo of the new bridge through the old bridge ... It does not mean a lot but it means a lot to me.”
The existing footbridge was constructed by the government and opened in 2007, following the relocation of the Star Ferry Pier to its current site in 2006.
It had been in service for pedestrians and commuters for 19 years.
“The new temporary passageway will provide an upgraded and seamless walking connection between the IFC Mall and the Central Terminal Building,” Henderson Land said in a statement on Sunday.

In 2021, the government approved a HK$50.8 billion (US$6.5 billion) tender to Henderson Land for a prime Central harbourfront site, setting a record as the most expensive land plot sold.
Most of the existing old bridges were incorporated into this private lot, and therefore transferred to the developer.
The harbourfront site, which takes up around 4,767 square metres (516,316 sq ft), is currently under development for a new project known as Central Yards.
The first phase of Central Yards will open in 2027, followed by the second phase in 2032.
The new passageway is “temporary” as it would eventually be demolished to make way for a multifunctional green harbourfront platform.
At that time, the public will be able to walk from the Central harbourfront to the IFC through the new shopping centre, according to the developer.
It added that the new passageway operates a 24-hour air-conditioning system, while the section near the Central Pier will be of semi-open design.
