Hong Kong police have arrested an elderly woman on suspicion of murder after she and her husband were found unconscious in a Tsim Sha Tsui hotel room, with the man sustaining a stab wound to the neck and later dying.
Cleaners at the Ramada Grand hotel on Austin Avenue discovered the woman, 73, and the man, 77, lying on the bed in their room at about 4.50pm on Thursday, police said.
Emergency services rushed them to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei, but the man was pronounced dead at 5.19pm.
The woman was being treated in an intensive care unit and was listed as stable.
Officers found knife wounds on the man’s neck and forearms. He had a stab wound about 2cm (0.8 inches) long on the right side of his neck, which was believed to be the fatal injury.
Police said the woman, who had no visible wounds, was holding a 23cm bloodstained fruit knife. A 20cm table knife and sleeping pills were also found in the room.
Officers believed the pair had taken dozens of the tablets. Two suicide notes, one written by each of them, were also discovered.
The couple, married for more than 40 years, wrote that they could no longer endure their long‑term illnesses and had decided to end their lives, according to police.
A source said both suffered from conditions including heart disease and liver disease.
Police said the pair had rented the hotel room since July last year.
The man was estimated to have died on Thursday afternoon. A post‑mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death.
No domestic violence or history of mental illness were on record. The woman has a daughter from a previous marriage.
The case, which has been classified as murder and attempted suicide, is being handled by the Yau Tsim district crime squad.
