Visitors to Hong Kong’s Palace Museum reported a smoother experience on Sunday, a day after chaotic crowds prompted the institution to suspend walk-in ticketing for its popular Egyptian exhibition before resuming sales in the afternoon.
Walk-in ticket sales for the “Ancient Egypt Unveiled: Treasures from Egyptian Museums” exhibition resumed at 3.30pm, with a limited number available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The museum had suspended walk-in ticket sales at 11am due to an “overwhelming number of visitors”.
The museum also announced that it would extend the gallery’s opening hours by two hours, closing at 8pm, and advised visitors to attend the exhibition in the morning or early evening to avoid peak afternoon crowds.
“Visitors who have not yet bought tickets but wish to attend the exhibition are advised to consider visiting on another date and to purchase tickets online in advance for better trip planning,” the museum said.

A dozen visitors who bought tickets in advance shared positive feedback about Sunday’s experience, saying the waiting time was manageable and that the crowds queued in an orderly manner to see the exhibits.
“I was worried last night after seeing news about the long and confusing queues,” said Ken Chan, an administrative worker in his 30s who booked his tickets a few days earlier and arrived around noon with his girlfriend.
“But today’s experience was beyond our expectations. We only waited about 15 minutes to enter the main exhibition hall and spent two hours inside.”
He said the venue was still “quite busy” since it was a Sunday, but it did not feel “too crowded” as visitors queued in an orderly manner and moved at a steady pace.
Kristy Chang, a tourist from Macau in her thirties who works in the service industry, and her friend Macin Lo, also in her thirties, shared similar impressions.
“We were told the waiting time would be around 30 minutes when we arrived at about 12.30pm, but it turned out to be much shorter – maybe 15 or 20 minutes,” Chang said.
She added that staff occasionally reminded visitors not to queue unnecessarily, as the exhibition did not follow a fixed tour route and people were free to view the displays in any order.
Lo added that while lines formed naturally at certain displays as visitors took turns for a closer look, movement overall was smooth.
By the time they finished their visit at around 2.30pm, no line remained outside the main exhibition hall.
Many visitors told the Post that the experience was worth the ticket price, praising the scale of the exhibition and the number of artefacts on display.
On Saturday, visitors criticised the museum’s poor crowd control and said staff had failed to provide clear directions or prevent queue-jumping.
Some took to social media to complain about the “disaster”, with numerous posts demanding refunds.
At around 6pm, the museum announced on its social media platforms that all tickets had sold out and instructed holders to wait outside the gate and follow staff instructions.
Around 8pm, it said ticket holders would be granted an additional visit on any day within the next three months.
The exhibition features 250 artefacts, including a towering statue of the pharaoh Tutankhamun.
He reigned from around 1336BC to 1327BC, and his tomb was famously discovered in 1922, revealing thousands of precious relics.
The exhibition, which opened on Thursday and runs until August 2026, is the largest display of relics from the ancient civilisation held in the city.
Tickets cost HK$190 (US$24) for adults and HK$95 for concessions, with other discounts and entry combinations offered.
The museum expects to attract more than 700,000 visitors over the nine-month exhibition period.
