Elderly residents in Hong Kong are enjoying a slew of perks on Sunday, from free rides to discounted meals, as the city marks Senior Citizens Day.
Established in 1979, the celebration is held on the third Sunday of November to recognise the contributions of the elderly and raise public awareness of care for the aged.
The Post highlights some major giveaways, as more than 400 organisations and merchants with over 3,800 outlets are rolling out special promotions.
Free MTR offers
Residents aged 65 or above can travel for free on the MTR, Light Rail, and MTR bus routes by presenting a valid JoyYou Card or Elder Octopus card without preregistration required.
The offer excludes the Airport Express, trips to and from Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau stations on the East Rail Line, First Class cabins and High Speed Rail.
Free bus and ferry rides
Most bus routes operated by KMB, Long Win, Citybus and New Lantao Bus Company are free for eligible Elder Octopus card holders or senior digital payment users. Exceptions include some airport services, overnight routes and designated sightseeing routes.
Most ferry travel is also free for those aged 60 years or above, with Fortune Ferry and Star Ferry extending the offer to one companion. Routes operated by the Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry, such as those linking Central with Peng Chau, Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan, are only free for seniors aged 65 and above.
Dining discounts
Many Hong Kong fast-food chains, including Cafe de Coral, Maxim’s MX, Super Super Congee and Noodles, and TamJai Yunnan Mixian noodles, are offering discounts of up to 25 per cent.
All Maxim’s MX branches, except the outlet at West Kowloon High Speed Rail Station, are offering 25 per cent off after 5pm. Separately, the chain also has a long-term promotion offering a 10 per cent discount for elderly diners until March 31 next year.
At Cafe de Coral, seniors can enjoy HK$4 (51 US cents) off orders over HK$40 during lunch and afternoon tea, and HK$8 off orders above HK$60 during dinner.
Hotels, Chinese restaurants and bakeries are also running special promotions.

Free and discounted sightseeing spots
Two of Hong Kong’s major attractions, Ocean Park and Ngong Ping 360, are offering discounts to seniors.
Ocean Park is offering free admission for visitors aged 65 or above and discounted HK$100 tickets for those between 60 and 64, down from the usual HK$538.
Ngong Ping 360 cable car is providing round-trip rides at HK$30 for seniors aged 60 and above on the standard cabin, allowing them to travel between Tung Chung and Ngong Ping Village, while the Hong Kong Observation Wheel is free for those over 60.
Other attractions offering free entry include the Hong Kong Wetland Park, Science Museum and Space Museum.
Free swimming pools
Around 30 public pools managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department across the city are offering free access to seniors aged 60 and above, along with a companion.
To enter, seniors must present a Senior Citizen Card issued by the Social Welfare Department or their Hong Kong Identity Card to the staff. Companions must also indicate that they are accompanying an elderly visitor.
