The Hong Kong Golf Club turned its fairways into avenues for giving this autumn, hosting two major tournaments that combined competition with community spirit.
From the international prestige of the Link Hong Kong Open to the members-led Cup of Kindness, the club put its commitment to overlooked causes front and centre.
Held from October 30 to November 2 at its Fanling course, this year’s Link Hong Kong Open marked the 64th edition of the city’s longest-running annual tournament.
On the eve of this golfing event on October 29, the club offered a session for Operation Santa Claus (OSC) to host games pitting amateur against professionals to raise funds.
OSC is an annual fundraising initiative which has been held by the Post and public broadcaster RTHK since 1988.
The event featured interactive booths to support OSC’s bid to raise funds for 13 local organisations that serve children, youth, the elderly and individuals with mental and physical disabilities.
The club also held its Cup of Kindness on October 12, marking the eighth consecutive partnership between OSC and the club. The event raised HK$1.5 million (US$193,000) for OSC this year.
“Every year, we’re seeing an increase in donations. We’re always trying to launch new initiatives to attract more members to donate,” club captain Andy Kwok Wing-leung said.

Since 2022, the club has expanded the Cup of Kindness into a more inclusive fundraising platform.
“Besides the golfing aspect of it, we have multiple online and silent auction items and other funding initiatives as well,” Kwok said.
Items up for bid included signed memorabilia from golf legends, football jerseys and even club membership numbers, some of which drew competitive bidding.
The club also invites representatives from beneficiary organisations to its events.
“Every year now, we bring in representatives from the beneficiaries – those that actually benefit from these donations,” Kwok said. “With the members interacting with them, I think that really helped.”
Looking ahead, Kwok said he hoped to make the Cup of Kindness a year-round initiative.
“We want to establish that link – you can play golf and also contribute to the community. That link will be very good to establish. The more you play, the more you give back,” he said.

Kwok also said he saw the potential for a broader impact.
“Not just for golf. I think we can apply that to all sports, to all clubs in Hong Kong. Play and give back,” he said.
As Kwok prepares to step down from his captaincy, he said he was looking forward to focusing more on its charity committee.
“Once I step down from the captain’s role, I would love to focus more on chairing the charity committee and raising funds for Hong Kong and for all the causes we’ve been supporting,” he said.
“Operation Santa Claus shares a mindset that’s very much aligned with ours. We both believe in supporting overlooked organisations and streamlining the way help reaches those in need.”
Asked what message he had for the public, Kwok added: “During festive seasons and year-round, giving back – in any amount – can make a difference. We want to reach those under the radar and strengthen collaboration and community support.”
