Hong Kong police have arrested a woman on suspicion of murder after the bodies of her mother and middle-aged brother were found in a flat in Cheung Sha Wan.
The case came to light at around 3.50pm on Monday when authorities received a call that a man, 47, had been found unconscious in a flat in the Hang Moon Building on Cheung Sha Wan Road.
Firefighters arrived and broke into the flat, where they found the bodies of the man and his mother, 85.
A police source said the mother had injuries on her neck. No visible injuries were detected on the son apart from red marks on his neck. The man, who had Down’s syndrome, was suspected to have died from suffocation, while the mother was stabbed with scissors.
The jobless suspect, 52, was said to have a history of mental illness, according to the source.
The brother was a care-home resident who had not been back there for three weeks. A social worker organised a home visit to the flat on Monday afternoon, the source said. The social worker knocked on the door but got no response before alerting authorities.
The suspect was found by police sitting at the edge of the building’s roof and pulled back to safety. Four people lived in the flat, the source said.
A pair of scissors was found near the building.

Police have classified the case as murder. The Sham Shui Po district crime squad is handling the probe.
The Social Welfare Department said it was deeply concerned about the incident and was trying to contact the family involved and provide appropriate help.
Last month, a man, 37, was suspected of having killed his wife and two children before jumping to his death from a hotel, with police saying his motive was believed to have stemmed from mental health issues.
In June, a man, 74, was convicted of manslaughter after strangling his daughter, who had autism and bipolar disorder, in 2022. A psychiatrist who testified as an expert witness said that prolonged physical and verbal abuse by the man’s daughter was one of the factors that might have caused his adjustment disorder.
In April last year, a woman, 71, was arrested after allegedly killing her husband who suffered from dementia. She was found injured and unconscious after a suspected suicide attempt. Police said she had thought about taking action after being concerned about being unable to care for him.
A month later, a woman and her mentally disabled son were found dead in a murder-suicide case suspected to be linked to her concerns that she could not care for him due to her own illness.

Hong Kong has been grappling with a series of murder or murder-suicide cases involving carers and family members who required long-term care. The government launched a database this year to identify high-risk carers looking after the elderly.
According to the government in 2023, the number of elderly people was expected to increase from 1.45 million in 2021 to 2.74 million in 2046.
In 2021, 330,164 or 16.6 per cent of those aged 60 or older living in domestic households required long-term care, official data showed. Half of them were being cared for by their children or children-in-law, and 18.7 per cent by spouses.
Coroner’s Court statistics show there were more than 470 suicides among residents aged 60 or above in 2022, 2023 and 2024, accounting for over 40 per cent of all cases.
