Comic book fans braved heavy downpours to attend Hong Kong’s annual anime and games festival on its last day, as vendors slashed product prices to clear inventory.
Despite a black rainstorm signal being issued on Tuesday morning, fans headed out to Ani-Com & Games Hong Kong 2025 at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, where some queued for more than 30 minutes.
The forecaster raised the black signal, the highest level in the three-tier warning system, at 9.10am before downgrading it to red at 11.05am and then amber at 11.45am. The warning was eventually lifted at 2.15pm.
Dickson Mo, 17, said it was his third time attending the annual festival, which started on Friday.
“I got soaked by the rain when walking from my home to Ho Man Tin station. But I knew once I got in the MTR, it would be fine, as the venue was directly connected to the station,” he said.
Mo, who joined two friends at the event, said he enjoyed “the festive atmosphere” of past fairs. He said he did not have a budget or specific vendors in mind but wanted to walk around and see whether there was anything interesting.
An 18-year-old chef, who only gave his name as Richard, said he secretly skipped work that morning without telling his boss.
“Now the black rain signal even made the situation better. I haven’t been told to go back to my workplace any time soon,” he said, adding he originally planned to find another excuse.
Some travelling from the New Territories said they experienced little rain and were eager to visit “as long as the event was open”.
Many shops launched last-day promotions, featuring banners with a call-to-action to “clear all items” and bundle sales and discounts.
Maggie Chan, a 17-year-old selling props for cosplayers at the festival, said she was caught in heavy rain when she left Kwun Tong at around 7am for the fair.
In a video she captured, water could be seen gushing from several manholes and flowing across the ground. She said that her part of her clothes got soaked but she was able to dry off after several hours.
She said customer turnout and traffic were notably lower on Tuesday compared with the previous two days.
“We are doing a huge discount on our last day. Some swords that originally cost more than HK$300 [US$38] were priced at HK$100 or HK$200 today,” Chan said.
Chuck Chan, a 40-year-old vendor at FX Creations, also said the traffic was less than the day before but he remained hopeful.
“Maybe people are waiting for the rain to be less intense, and there will be more people coming in the afternoon,” Chan said.
He estimated that sales would be 5 per cent less than last year, as the last day was supposed to be the busiest day to clear stock.
Suki Leung, an anime illustrator in her thirties taking part in the Hong Kong Comics Support Programme, began giving out free gifts since Monday to those who followed her Instagram account.
“It’s my first year attending the event, and I feel it’s a great platform to showcase my work,” said Leung, who has gained more than 100 followers since the start of the event.
She said that the government-sponsored programme had helped her financially, enabling her to publish her comic book and participate in the event to promote her work.
