Hong Kong police are investigating the case of a 14-year-old girl who was blackmailed by a stranger on a mobile chat app, who claimed to have taken an indecent video of her.
The force said on Tuesday it received a report from the girl at 10.49pm the day before at Tsz Hong Estate in Tsz Wan Shan.
According to a police spokesman, the girl met the stranger on a voice chat app called Wefun and her indecent video was filmed via WhatsApp. There was no monetary loss reported.
After a preliminary investigation, the force classified the alleged crime as making an unwarranted demand with menaces.
No arrests have been made yet, as the case is being investigated by the Wong Tai Sin district investigation team.
Wefun is a platform for “pure, sincere and warm voice chats” for young people, according to information on Apple’s App Store. Interactive games are also available on the app.
A check by the Post found that the app provides a number of chatrooms with various themes such as making friends, chatting with a girlfriend, and singing karaoke. Many of the chatrooms use profile pictures with simplified Chinese characters.
Users can join chatrooms hosted by other accounts and speak in those chatrooms by pressing a button to activate their microphone.
A Post reporter immediately received private messages from several accounts after joining a few chat rooms.
According to the Theft Ordinance, a person commits blackmail by making any unwarranted demand with menaces, with a view to obtaining gain for themselves or another person, or causing loss to others.
Anyone convicted of blackmail can face a prison term of up to 14 years.

Police earlier said they had received 170 reports of scams centred on compensated dating or naked chats involving more than HK$4.5 million (US$573,250) in losses so far this year, with students accounting for about a third of victims.
The force appealed to young people to develop awareness and protect themselves, especially during the summer holidays, to avoid falling into “sexual exploitation traps”.
Official data showed 2,029 cases of compensated dating-related scams were recorded in 2024, compared with 2,136 in 2023, with victims losing a total of HK$100.9 million.
There were also 2,434 cases of naked chat-related scams last year, up from 2,117 in 2023, with HK$80.2 million lost in total.
