Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu has voiced his appreciation for scenic views on Hong Kong Island while touring a soon-to-open HK$1.7 billion (US$218.3 million) harbourfront boardwalk located underneath a major expressway.
The city leader also rode a bicycle and jogged with youngsters on the boardwalk below the Island Eastern Corridor on Saturday morning, greeting residents at a waterfront park.
The HK$1.7 billion boardwalk took more than three years to build. The western half of the walkway will open on January 26, while the rest will become accessible in stages during the second half of the year.
“There are many places worth appreciating along the coast of Hong Kong Island,” Lee said while chatting with residents.
“The harbour scenery was really beautiful when we were walking along this section. We are usually too busy to appreciate it properly. So we often say that the longer you look at something, the more you appreciate it. We should cherish what we have around us.”
The 2.2km (1.36 miles) promenade connects harbourfront walkways in Causeway Bay and Quarry Bay to create a 13km path along the northern coast of Hong Kong Island.

Most of the boardwalk decks were built on existing offshore pillars that support the elevated Island Eastern Corridor expressway.
The city leader also highlighted the area’s movable bridges, noting they were a unique feature of the new boardwalk and designed to keep waterways accessible.
Lee also tasted some home-made sticky rice dessert offered by a group of domestic helpers.
“Not too sweet! Good, good, good,” he said after having a bite.
“Have a good gathering, enjoy good scenery, good company, good friends, and after a hard week’s work, enjoy, relax and re-energise, keep going. Good day!”
David Lam Chi-man, the city’s acting secretary for development, and Michael Fong Hok-shing, director of civil engineering and development, also joined Lee on the one-hour walking tour.
In a social media post later on Saturday, Lee said young joggers had told him the boardwalk felt “novel and interesting”.
They said they could feel the vibrations of vehicles on the highway above them, while other residents at the preview compared the experience to “having a stroll and playing by the sea”, he wrote.
“I believe that after the boardwalk opens, it will become another ‘check-in hotspot’ for residents, allowing everyone to experience the vitality and charm of the Victoria Harbour waterfront,” Lee added.
