Hong Kong leader John Lee Ka-chiu will attend the opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Saturday, with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department live-streaming all events at 36 sports venues.
Lee, who will depart the city on Friday, said he would also head to the athletes’ village and sporting events to cheer for competitors from the city.
The Hong Kong delegation in Hangzhou will hold a welcome and flag-raising ceremony in the village on Friday afternoon, officials said.
“I believe Hong Kong athletes will do their best in the Hangzhou games and show their strength so that they can bring glory to Hong Kong,” he said.
Hong Kong is sending its largest-ever delegation to a Games, with some 680 athletes competing across 40 sports. Another 280 officials, staff and medical team members will accompany them.

Events at the Asian Games started on Tuesday, although they do not officially open until Saturday, with the closing ceremony on October 8. Hangzhou will be the third Chinese city to host the Games, after Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010.
Lee will attend the opening ceremony with several Hong Kong officials, namely the secretary for culture, sports and tourism, the director of the Chief Executive’s Office, the head of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, as well as the city’s commissioner for sports.
The city leader will return home on Monday, with Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan Kwok-Ki filling in as acting chief executive.

On Tuesday, Lee said that to make it convenient for residents to watch the action, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department would live-stream events at 36 of its venues citywide from Saturday.
Local broadcaster HOY TV is also televising the Games, with the opening ceremony being shown from 8pm on Saturday, and full daily coverage starting on September 24 on channel 77. There will also be programmes on channels 76 and 78 depending on the sport and whether Hong Kong athletes or teams make it through to the medal rounds.
Live-stream venues include sports centres in Hong Kong Park, Chai Wan, Harbour Road, To Kwa Wan and Sham Shui Po.
While some of Hong Kong’s athletes are already in mainland China, a sizeable contingent will leave on Thursday, when officials also plan to announce the identities of the flag bearers for the opening ceremony.
Some 20 badminton players, men and women, will be among that number and at a press gathering on Tuesday, head coach Tim He Yiming made it clear he expected his squad to return with medals around their necks.
Much of that hope is pinned on Angus Ng Ka-long in the men’s singles, and Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet in the mixed doubles.
“Other than world No 1 Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, who won’t be in Hangzhou, other players are more or less on a similar level and those who can perform on the day will win, including Ng,” he said.
“The mixed doubles pair proved at the Hong Kong Open last week, when they won silver, that they have the quality to challenge for a medal.”
