Hong Kong police took away seven people who appeared in Causeway Bay on Thursday evening carrying flowers and dressed in black to mark the 37th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown.
They included Chan Po-ying, former chairwoman of the now-defunct League of Social Democrats opposition group, and activist Virginia Fung King-man.
Police said they stopped and searched five men and two women, aged between 17 and 79, for allegedly disrupting order in the area around Great George Street and East Point Road. They were removed from the scene for further investigation and later allowed to leave, the force added.
Police said they would deploy appropriate measures in response to threats to national security and public safety and order.
For about three decades, Victoria Park in Causeway Bay hosted an annual candlelight vigil to commemorate the June 4, 1989, crackdown in Beijing. The event drew tens of thousands of people each year until it was banned on public health grounds in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic.
On Thursday evening, a heavy police presence blanketed the popular shopping district, with officers patrolling entrances to the MTR station and areas around the park.

Chan, dressed in black, visited the park holding an artificial yellow flower. She was intercepted by officers as she walked in Causeway Bay.
After she refused a request by plain-clothes officers to put away the flower, they confiscated it and placed her in a police van.
Fung, a former district councillor, reportedly made a June 4 hand gesture in the pedestrian zone on Great George Street. Officers intercepted her shortly afterwards and pushed her arms down, before escorting her into a police van.
Officers also intercepted a man outside the Sogo department store who put on a blindfold and held up a copy of China’s constitution.
He had earlier used a red marker pen to write the word “people” in Chinese characters on his arm, erasing them with spray and a towel. Officers subsequently escorted him away.
A student dressed in black and holding prayer beads was reportedly stopped and searched by police but later released.

At the US consulate in Central, lit candles were placed on its windowsills and a photo of the building was posted online to mark the anniversary.
The British consulate posted a short video on social media featuring a hand holding up a black mobile phone with its flashlight on.

The French consulate shared a statement by a European Union spokesman who said the bloc continued to stand with all those who peacefully defended human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The crackdown on the 1989 protests in the capital has long been a political taboo for Beijing, with authorities banning public discussion of the incident on social media.
The Victoria Park vigil was once the only large-scale event commemorating the crackdown on Chinese soil.
The vigil’s organiser, the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, disbanded in 2021 after the national security law came into effect the previous year.
No opposition groups have applied to hold events related to the anniversary since the alliance’s disbandment. Pro-establishment groups have held carnivals in the park during the period around the anniversary.
