At least 14 students have been sent to hospital after drinking free beverages that were found with suspicious pinhole marks near a sports ground in Hong Kong, prompting a police investigation.
Students from Maryknoll Secondary School in Kwun Tong reportedly posted messages on social media claiming that free bottles of a sports drink had been handed out during lunch on Wing Ting Road, a short distance from the Hammer Hill Road Sports Ground, where the school was holding an athletics meet on Tuesday.
A police spokesman said a parent called the force at about 2pm.
As of 10pm, 14 students had been sent to United Christian Hospital, with half of them later discharged while the rest were listed as in a stable condition.
The four boys and 10 girls were aged between 11 and 17.
Officers visited the site to investigate. Plain-clothes officers were seen searching rubbish bins outside the sports ground and removing plastic bottles carrying the brand name “Scream” for examination.
Detectives also entered the venue to conduct inquiries.


The South China Morning Post has contacted the distributor of the sports drink for comment.
The case has been handed to the Kowloon East district crime squad.
A message posted on the social media platform Threads carried photos of the event.
It read: “We found pinholes in some of the drinks and suspect that an unknown liquid may have been injected into them. Teachers have since collected all the drinks.”
The school said the incident involved food safety concerns after free bottled drinks were distributed outside the venue during its athletics meet by individuals not associated with the school.
After some bottles were found to have suspected damage, the school advised students not to consume the beverages and collected the affected drinks, it said.
The school added it was fully cooperating with authorities and urged parents to closely monitor their children’s health.
