Police have arrested three people and broken up a large-scale drug production factory in northern Hong Kong, seizing HK$23 million (US$3 million) worth of suspected methamphetamine, or Ice.
The force said on Saturday that two men and a woman, aged 49 to 56, were arrested on Thursday night.
Police in Fanling first intercepted one of the men, who was holding a two-way permit, a document issued by mainland Chinese authorities allowing residents to travel to Hong Kong.
Senior Inspector Chan Lik-ho of the force’s narcotics bureau said police then discovered a large-scale drug manufacturing factory in a Fanling unit.
Officers seized about 9kg of suspected Ice and 43 litres of suspected liquid Ice with a market value of around HK$23 million, some drug-manufacturing tools, and a large quantity of poisonous chemicals, he said.
Advanced heaters, filters, reactors and cooling equipment were also confiscated.
“We believe the drug factory was in operation for three to four days,” Chan said.
Chan said officers later arrested the man’s two accomplices in Sau Mau Ping.
The trio will be temporarily charged with drug manufacturing offences and will appear at Fanling Court on Monday.
Anyone who contravenes the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance is liable on conviction to life imprisonment and a fine of up to HK$5 million.
