A man believed to be more than HK$1 million (US$ 127,470) in debt is suspected of murdering his wife in their flat after previous financial disputes, according to preliminary investigations by Hong Kong police.

Superintendent Kwan Chun-ting, assistant district commander of Eastern district crime squad, said on Thursday that a 51-year-old man had turned himself in at Kowloon City Police Station at 7.30pm the previous day and confessed to killing his wife.

“We believe the incident happened between the early hours and daytime [on Wednesday] when they were inside the same room,” he said.

Police arrested the suspect on Wednesday evening after officers found his 53-year-old wife dead on the bed in the master bedroom of their flat at Heng Fa Chuen private housing estate, with knife wounds on her neck, torso and hands.
