Former Hong Kong lawmaker William Wong Kam-fai, who resigned after an alleged drink-driving incident, has been given two months to consider his plea on four traffic offences.
Wong, 66, was not required to enter a plea during his first appearance at Sha Tin Court on Wednesday.
Defence lawyer Paul Tse Wai-chun, also a former legislator, sought a nine-week adjournment to allow time for legal advice. Magistrate Raymond Wong Kwok-fai set the next hearing for November 11.
A computer scientist by profession, Wong became the first Legislative Council member to resign over personal conduct since Beijing overhauled Hong Kong’s electoral system in 2021 to restrict public office to those deemed “patriotic”.
He was arrested in the early hours of June 30 on suspicion of crashing his car into two parked vehicles while under the influence of alcohol on the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) campus in Sha Tin the previous day.
According to a charge sheet available for press inspection, Wong’s breath-alcohol concentration was 45 micrograms per 100 millilitres – more than double the statutory limit of 22 micrograms.
He is also alleged to have failed to stop after the accident and to have failed to report it to police within 24 hours.

Wong faces four charges: driving with an alcohol concentration in breath above the prescribed limit, dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident and failing to report an accident.
The court extended Wong’s HK$5,000 (US$638) bail, previously granted by police, but barred him from driving or contacting prosecution witnesses.
He was ordered to surrender his driving licence and to report to police once every two weeks from September 23 upon his return from a business trip.
Following his arrest, Wong apologised for “causing inconvenience” to Legco. CUHK suspended him from his administrative duties as an associate dean of its engineering faculty.
Wong is a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the nation’s top political advisory body.
