From ignoring lights to riding side by side, police flag common cycling offences driving rise in fatal accidents
Fatal cycling accidents in Hong Kong more than doubled in the first half of 2026 compared with a year earlier, with nine deaths recorded, as police point to cyclists ignoring traffic signals and road signs.
Overall, 59 fatal traffic accidents were recorded in the first six months of the year, killing 63 people, up more than 40 per cent from a year earlier. Fatal cases involving bicycles surged 125 per cent, accounting for nine of those deaths.
“Most cyclists tend to ignore traffic signals and road signs, and ride without carefully observing surrounding road conditions,” a police spokesman said.
“Combined with dangerous behaviours such as riding on the pavement, illegally carrying passengers and riding side by side, this largely increases the risk of accidents.”
