Hong Kong national security police have arrested three people on suspicion of acting with seditious intent over a gathering outside Prince Edward MTR station to mark a 2019 protest flashpoint there.
A police force spokesman said on Saturday that two men and a woman were arrested on Thursday, noting that some people were allegedly shouting seditious slogans and holding white flowers outside the station on August 31.
“The people concerned were suspected of spreading false information and attacking the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government with lies,” the spokesman said.
He added that their acts were also suspected of smearing the police force with the intention of inciting hatred against the government and its law enforcement agencies.

Prince Edward MTR station became a flashpoint during the anti-government protests seven years ago, when a controversial police operation on August 31, 2019, resulted in riot officers pursuing protesters into train carriages and beating people with batons and using pepper spray.
Gatherings outside the busy MTR station subsequently became a near-monthly occurrence. At least 14 people were arrested in the Prince Edward neighbourhood during a 2020 gathering.
The force spokesman slammed those peddling lies about events in the station in 2019.
“It is a lie manipulated by people with ulterior motives to spread lies, attack the Hong Kong government and smear the police force, attempting to achieve their political objectives by endangering public peace,” the spokesman said.
The two men and a woman were arrested under the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance for “doing an act with seditious intention”. The maximum punishment for the charge is seven years’ imprisonment.
Police also seized exhibits from the homes of the three suspects, without disclosing what they were. Two suspects remained in custody as of Saturday afternoon, while the third was bailed out from Hung Hom police station at 3pm.
