A Hong Kong court has granted bail to three women after they were charged with fighting in the children’s play area of a shopping centre and barred them from returning to the venue.
Leung Lai-ha, 68, her 34-year-old daughter Ng Ka-wun and Xu Yang, 34, made their first appearance at Kwun Tong Court on Thursday to face charges after their altercation on August 26 at the atrium of APM shopping centre in Kwun Tong.
Their confrontation was captured in a video posted on social media, and the three defendants face a joint count of fighting in a public place.
The video appears to show the adults engaged in a physical fight, with Xu slapping Leung and the elderly woman hitting back at Xu and her five-year-old daughter.
Ng then enters the fray, scuffling with Xu as the fight devolves into a brawl.
The video, which drew widespread attention online, did not show how the argument arose but captured Xu’s daughter allegedly being knocked to the ground.
Court documents seen by the South China Morning Post on Thursday revealed more details of the defendants’ identities.


Xu, who is from mainland China, holds a two-way entry permit and makes frequent trips to Hong Kong. She said she was unemployed.
Ng is an insurance agent, while her mother Leung is a retiree. Both are Hong Kong residents.
Apart from the charge of fighting in a public place, Leung also faces a separate count of common assault for allegedly hitting the five-year-old girl.
At the hearing, Leung and Ng’s lawyer asked the court for time to submit a letter of negotiation to the Department of Justice.

Xu requested permission to leave Hong Kong as her family lived across the border.
But Acting Principal Magistrate Li Chi-ho rejected her request after considering Xu’s risk of absconding.
Before granting bail to all three defendants, he imposed conditions including barring them from leaving Hong Kong and prohibiting them from returning to the shopping centre.
Li also increased the cash bail from HK$1,000 (US$128) to HK$5,000 for all three defendants.
The next hearing will take place on November 5.
