Hong Kong authorities have arrested a man and woman from a clinic on suspicion of selling a laboratory reagent as a bogus vaccine against more than 20 types of cancer.
The arrests followed a joint operation by the Department of Health and police, during which investigators raided 13 premises linked to the company, said Frank Chan Ling-fung, an assistant director of health who oversees drug matters.
Chan said there had been no reports of illness among people who had received the “WT1 cancer vaccine”.
While WT1 refers to a legitimate protein target being studied in cancer research, the case involved patients allegedly being injected with a German laboratory chemical containing the protein that is only for research purposes.
The chemical is not registered as a medicine anywhere in the world.
Authorities seized more than 50 unregistered injections, most of them vitamin-type health products. The injections were classified as Part I poisons under local law.
The clinic had previously come under official scrutiny after media reports exposed its alleged illegal practices.
Reports said the clinic and its affiliates promoted the WT1 jab on mainland Chinese platforms, advertising injections in Hong Kong for HK$120,000 (US$15,305).
Chan said undercover officers had been told that the injections cost five-figure sums.

He added that the man, 28, who was in charge of the clinic, and the woman remained in custody and further arrests could follow.
Media outlets reported five years ago that a manager at the clinic and another employee allegedly smuggled unregistered immune-cell therapy injections into the city, administering them to celebrities and regular residents.
Asked why no action had been taken over the past five years, and whether the case had been referred to the Medical Council, Chan told reporters to direct their questions to the watchdog for the sector.
Chan said the Department of Health had ordered local advertising publishers to remove related promotions that might have breached the Undesirable Medical Advertisements Ordinance.
For advertisements on mainland platforms, Hong Kong authorities had notified regulators over the border and requested the posts’ removal.
