A 62-year-old man who fled Hong Kong after a brutal murder on a Sai Kung beach nearly 37 years ago has been arrested in Thailand and will be extradited back to the city on Thursday, the South China Morning Post has learned.
Mui Yiu-keung was reportedly detained on Monday at a house in Bangkok’s Nong Chok district.
Thai police said the arrest was made at the request of Hong Kong authorities, who had been pursuing the last of four suspects linked to the killing of a man at Lung Ha Wan beach in August 1989.
Mui was reportedly not carrying any identification when arrested. When questioned, he admitted his identity.
Mui had reportedly lived in the country since 1994 and ran an eatery in Lam Phak Chi subdistrict. He married a Thai woman and fathered three children.
The suspect, who declined to comment on the murder, has been charged with illegal immigration in Thailand and extradition proceedings are under way.
The SCMP has learned that he will be handed over to Hong Kong officers on Thursday, with Commissioner of Police Joe Chow Yat-ming expected to brief the media.

On August 31, 1989, Mui – then recently released from prison for another offence – allegedly lured Lui Yuk-chai, 26, to the beach with three accomplices, including former restaurant manager Young Kwok-cheung.
Mui accused Lui of wrongfully implicating him in the offence for which he had been jailed, a court was told back in 2001.
The court later heard that Lui was beaten with a spade for 20 minutes, bound with nylon rope, gagged with tape and suffocated with a plastic bag before being buried in the sand.
His body was discovered the next day by a boy on the beach. A pathologist ruled he died of suffocation.
Young fled to Thailand and mainland China before being captured in 2000. He was extradited to Hong Kong and convicted of murder in 2001, receiving a life sentence.
Another accomplice, Chui Tin-shing, was jailed for eight years for manslaughter and has since been released. A third man was acquitted.
Mui, identified as the ringleader, evaded capture for more than three decades.
The police force’s East Kowloon regional crime unit is investigating the case.
