Hong Kong police have arrested a man for allegedly trying to open a plane cabin door during a Cathay Pacific Airways flight from Boston.
The force said it received a report from the city’s flagship carrier at around 4.45am on Thursday about the incident.
The plane landed at Hong Kong airport at around 5am, with police officers boarding the aircraft to arrest the suspect, a 20-year-old mainland Chinese man, for allegedly violating the Aviation Security Ordinance.
The case has been classified as a “request for police assistance” and is being handled by the force’s airport district investigation team.
In a written reply to the Post, Cathay Pacific said that a passenger was suspected of attempting to open an aircraft door on flight CX811, which departed from Boston on Wednesday.
The cabin crew immediately attended to the situation, inspected the door to ensure it was securely closed, and reported the incident to the relevant authorities and police, it said.
“No crew members or passengers were injured, and the flight landed safely at Hong Kong International Airport [in the] early morning of Thursday,” it said.
According to the Aviation Security Ordinance, it is an offence to wilfully tamper or interfere with any aircraft component, apparatus, equipment or on-board systems whilst on a plane.
The maximum penalty is two years in prison and a HK$50,000 (US$6,425) fine.
