A man suspected to have robbed a Hong Kong bank with a knife and injured a female employee before making off with HK$382,000 (US$48,700) has been arrested in mainland China and handed over to city authorities.
Police said on Tuesday the 49-year-old jobless man was detained in Shenzhen and handed over to Hong Kong police at the Shenzhen Bay checkpoint at about 9.30pm.
His girlfriend was also arrested after she returned to the city on suspicion of assisting an offender. The 34-year-old clerk met up with the man shortly after the hold-up and stayed with him during their alleged escape, according to Superintendent Iu Wing-kan of the New Territories South regional headquarters.
The suspected robber was believed to have fled to his flat in City One, a private estate in Sha Tin, after allegedly holding up a nearby branch of Hang Seng Bank on Monday afternoon.
A source earlier said members of the elite police tactical unit, the Flying Tigers, were searching for the man at block 50 of City One. Images seen by the Post showed officers in tactical gear entering the block, while several unmarked police vans were parked nearby.
According to police, a “suitable unit” was deployed to the residential block after officers realised that individuals unrelated to the case were also present in the flat. The arrangement was made considering the suspect’s possible reaction and the safety of the concerned individuals.
The man allegedly entered the bank at the Fortune City One shopping centre on Ngan Shing Street alone on Monday afternoon. At around 5pm, he allegedly took a butcher knife measuring 30cm (11.8 inches) out of a paper bag and held the weapon to a female employee’s neck.
The Cantonese-speaking man then allegedly forced her to take money from a counter, about HK$382,000 in various currencies, before putting the knife and money into the paper bag and fled.
The victim, aged 35, was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital for a minor cut and was discharged.
About three hours before the hold-up, the man tried to break into a house on Clear Water Bay Road in Tseung Kwan O, but failed when the maid noticed him, Iu said.

He allegedly returned home after the robbery, changed clothes and drove his car to the Heung Yuen Wai border checkpoint, where he entered Shenzhen with the woman. His car was later found in a parking lot there.
Iu said officers had notified their counterparts on the mainland and were informed that he had been detained on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the stolen cash had yet to be located.
Authorities have stepped up security at the shopping centre, with a jewellery shop operator saying that some valuable pieces would not be displayed temporarily.
Yeung Ho-ming, 43, a salesman at the nearby Fung Shing Jewellery, said he did not witness the robbery but saw police officers patrolling the area.
“We temporarily took down some high-value jewellery for the sake of security,” he said.
But Yeung said he believed the robbery was an isolated case and that he was not very concerned about security.

Retiree Peter Loong Siu-Wing, 82, who lives in the district and frequently visits the bank with his wife, said he was not scared by the robbery because customers were not targeted by criminals.
“We just finished using the bank’s services [on Tuesday]. The robber targeted the bank’s money and not the money of normal residents,” he said. “I am certain that the suspect will be apprehended sooner or later.”
Hang Seng Bank said its City One branch resumed normal operations on Tuesday, with enhanced security measures in place.
The staff member who was injured was discharged from hospital on Monday night and was not currently working.
The bank’s leadership team also visited the branch to offer support to staff members.
