A Hong Kong businessman has become the 10th person convicted of taking part in a riot with a white-clad mob that attacked protesters and commuters at a Yuen Long railway station at the height of the 2019 social unrest.
Deputy District Judge Amy Chan Wai-mun on Tuesday also asked the defence lawyer of Tang Ka-man, 46, to find out from his client why a group of white-shirted men launched an attack against civilians clad in black on the night of July 21 at the MTR station.
Evidence revealed in court showed that some members of the white-clad group were holding foam boards with slogans reading “Defend Yuen Long, defend our home”.
Chan said she did not understand why the white-clad group would suddenly head to the station and use rods to attack people.
“I want to know why they had to hit those who wore black tops and where the slogan boards came from,” she said.
The judge found in the footage that Tang had held a rattan stick and stood among the front line of the white-clad group when the clashes happened.
The defendant also threw objects and the stick at the opposite group, prompting Chan to rule that he was clearly a participant of the riot.
In addition to his presence, the judge ruled that he was one of the principals “and provided encouragement by action”.
The prosecution had relied on footage from security cameras, media outlets and other visual materials to argue that Tang was the person seen in the evidence.
But the defence called a restaurant owner to establish an alibi for Tang, arguing that he was seen in the diner during the period of the alleged riot.

The defence witness also gave a different description of the defendant’s facial appearance than the one identified in the prosecution evidence.
But the judge found her a dishonest witness and said her testimony was “untruthful and unreliable” after she herself examined the evidence closely and concluded that the man seen in the footage and the defendant were the same person.
Chan convicted Tang of one count of rioting and another of conspiracy to wound.
She was told that the defendant had committed a similar wounding offence in the past and had been jailed for nine years.
The prosecution said Tang, a Yuen Long villager who ran a car park business, denied he had any association with triads.
Tang was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on December 23.
On the night of July 21, 2019, around 100 white-clad men with rattan and wooden sticks injured 45 people at Yuen Long MTR station. The group was seen attacking protesters as they returned from a demonstration on Hong Kong Island. Ordinary commuters were also caught up in the violence.
Nine men who were among the white-shirted mob were previously jailed for 3½ to seven years for their roles in the attack, while another was acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
Police have separately charged eight men associated with the black-clad group with one joint count of rioting, including former opposition lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting, who was injured during the incident. The trial is continuing.
