Hong Kong’s flag carrier, Cathay Pacific Airways, will expand its network by including four new destinations in Latin America via Madrid through code-share flights with Spanish airline Iberia.
Passengers from Hong Kong will be able to travel to Fortaleza and Recife in Brazil, Buenos Aires in Argentina, and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic under the new arrangement.
Cathay will also increase the frequency of non-stop flights from Hong Kong to Madrid from four a week to daily, starting on October 25.
A spokesman for the airline said customers could now make bookings for the Recife, Fortaleza and Buenos Aires routes, with flights starting from July 20, and for Santo Domingo, which would start operating from August 1.
“These new code-share flights will bring Argentina and the Dominican Republic into Cathay’s code-share network for the first time while strengthening connectivity between Hong Kong and the emerging belt and road region of Latin America,” a spokesman for the airline said.
The Belt and Road Initiative is China’s plan to expand global trade.
The Hong Kong carrier’s chief customer and commercial officer, Lavinia Lau Hoi-zee, said Cathay was the only airline offering non-stop connectivity between the city and Spain.
“These enhancements underscore our commitment to strengthening connectivity between Asia and markets around the world … and enhancing Hong Kong’s status as one of the world’s leading international aviation hubs,” Lau said.
Currently, Cathay Pacific flies to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo in Brazil, Mexico City and Guadalajara in Mexico, Lima in Peru and Santiago in Chile in Latin America, through code-share partnerships via Europe, North America and Oceania.
Most journeys from Hong Kong to Fortaleza and Recife take at least 30 hours and require two layovers. Journeys to Buenos Aires and Santo Domingo typically involve one to two layovers, with travel times of at least 23 hours.
Separately, Cathay Pacific’s budget arm, HK Express, announced that fuel surcharges would be reduced on some of its routes from Thursday. The surcharge will fall from US$37 to US$30.70 for flights to Vietnam and from 1,230 baht (US$36.56) to 1,020 baht for flights to Thailand.
However, the fuel surcharge remains unchanged for some destinations, including Japan at 14,300 yen (US$88), South Korea at 65,000 won (US$43.56) and mainland China at 135 yuan (US$20).
