Hongkongers took full advantage of perks and discounts offered at restaurants, shops, transport and museums to celebrate the 29th anniversary of the city’s return to Chinese sovereignty on Wednesday.
Long queues formed at local cha chaan teng, cinemas, shopping centres and outside attractions in the West Kowloon Cultural District, as well as for free ferry and tram rides.
At the arts hub, all free tickets were snapped up for the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the M+ museum. Visitor numbers at the M+ hit a daily record of nearly 30,000 as of 7pm. The Palace Museum welcomed 8,700 visitors as of 7pm, a 20 per cent year-on-year increase. The two museums closed at 8pm.
At Tai Hing Group’s Men Wah Bing Teng cha chaan teng in Tai Po, accountant Elaine Tsui and her daughter enjoyed a 29 per cent discount on breakfast.
“A single breakfast in a cha chaan teng usually costs around HK$50, but today we get to eat two meals for only HK$49,” Tsui said. “I don’t usually come here, but since there are discounts, I thought, why not?”

At PHI Coffee and Pancake in Central, customers took refuge from the heat while making the most of its July 1 promotions, including a 29 per cent discount on selected desserts.
Among them was 65-year-old retiree Mary Chan, who treated herself to a sweet white peach souffle for HK$133, including service charge, down from HK$146.
She said she was aware of the various citywide promotions and found them “quite attractive”.
Trams were packed with passengers, as operator Hong Kong Tramways offered free rides from Wednesday for three consecutive days.
The Star Ferry also offered free rides on Wednesday for trips between Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui, while other ferry operators handed out free tickets for specific routes.
At the Star Ferry terminus in Tsim Sha Tsui, oil company Sinopec gave away souvenirs to passengers, attracting crowds. Around 100 people, including tour groups, packed the pier to board free ferry services.

The MTR Corporation gave away 71,000 domestic single-journey tickets and offered discounts for the Airport Express.
At The Peak Tram terminus in Central, visitors braved the hot weather to queue up for a 15 per cent discount on return tickets.
Meanwhile, some of Hong Kong’s senior officials celebrated the occasion by gathering with their colleagues.
Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po visited a halal restaurant at Bowrington Road Cooked Food Centre in Causeway Bay with colleagues to mark the occasion.
“As the economy continues to improve and market sentiment grows, let us unite, pool our strengths and drive sustainable, inclusive economic development,” he said, sharing photos with restaurant staff.
Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk Wing-hing visited a siu mei chain restaurant in Sheung Wan with Deputy Secretary for Justice Horace Cheung Kwok-kwan and Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong Wai-lun.
Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han said on social media that he visited the Yue Hwa Chinese Products shop in Jordan and bought fitness gear and ping pong paddles at discounted prices to mark the anniversary.
“I left absolutely delighted with my hands full,” he said.

Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau had brunch at a local cha chaan teng and enjoyed its handover anniversary offers.
A photo posted on Facebook showed him with deputy health chief Cecilia Fan Yuen-man and political assistant Keith Kei Chi-hung having pineapple buns, egg tarts and milk tea.
