Hong Kong’s consumer watchdog has received dozens of complaints after Taiwanese rock band Mayday cancelled one of its coming concerts at Kai Tak Sports Park and replaced it with a new date later in the week, sparking frustration among fans – particularly those travelling from mainland China and overseas.
The Consumer Council said that as of 1pm on Tuesday, it had received 24 complaints about the cancelled show – eight from local consumers and 16 from fans outside the city.
The watchdog said the total amount involved in the complaints was HK$63,613, with HK$6,700 the single biggest sum.
“The complaints included the organisers’ failure to reschedule the concert for consumers and disruptions to hotel and transport arrangements for attendees who travelled specifically to Hong Kong,” a spokesman said.
“The Consumer Council urges the organisers to handle the matter properly, including considering different alternative solutions.”
The group’s record company, B’in Music, announced late on Monday that the show originally scheduled for March 24 would be cancelled, while an additional performance on March 29 would be added as part of the “Mayday #5525+1 Live Tour” in Hong Kong.
In a statement on social media, the five-member, all-male band said the decision followed an internal assessment to “ensure every show can be presented in the best possible condition” and allow fans at each performance to fully enjoy the concert experience.
The new March 29 concert coincides with Mayday’s anniversary week, with organisers describing it as a “birthday limited” performance marking the group’s 29th year.
All tickets for the March 24 show will be automatically refunded through the original payment channels, including service and delivery fees where applicable, according to the organisers. Tickets for the March 29 show will go on public sale at noon on March 11.
Fans quickly voiced frustration online following the announcement, with some complaining that the sudden change had disrupted travel plans.
Several concertgoers said they had already booked flights and accommodation to attend the March 24 performance, while others expressed concern that tickets for the newly added show might be difficult to secure.
“All of my plans have been disrupted,” one user on mainland social media platform RedNote said.
“And now they expect us to try to scramble for March 29 tickets like a clown!”

Meanwhile, Hong Kong veteran singer Sandy Lam Yik-lin announced that she would be holding two concerts at Kai Tak Sports Park’s main stadium on May 16 and 17.
Her “Resonance: Reconstructed Hong Kong Exclusive” shows mark her return to a Hong Kong stage after a nine-year hiatus, with ticket prices ranging from HK$588 (US$75) to HK$1,688. General sales will launch on March 20.
Lam joins a list of stars performing at the park this year, including Singaporean singer Stefanie Sun Yanzi this coming Friday and Sunday, as well as South Korean pop groups (G)I-DLE and EXO in June.
